About Chennai
Chennai is the largest city in the state of Tamil Nadu and is sited on the south-eastern coast of the Indian sub-continent. The city, formerly known as Madras, was established by the British. They developed it into a major urban center and naval base. About the 20th century, Chennai became an important administrative headquarters and the capital of the then Madras Presidency. The growth and expansion of The British Empire led to the development of Madras.
Chennai, also called the 'Gateway to South India', has been blessed with a cornucopia of arts and literature. It is well known for its variety of cultural events, including performing arts such as Dance, Music and Drama. Chennai is also well known for ‘Kollywood’, the Tamil film industry.
Automobiles, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare are the major industries in and around the city. Chennai is also the second largest exporter of Information Technology, after Bengaluru. The city is also a leader in the fields of sports and education. A number of reputed educational institutions and stadiums dot the city.
